Dragging luggage across Manhattan is a bad way to start a trip. If you stay within a 10-minute walk of a major subway station, you can get almost anywhere in the city without hailing a cab or renting a car. The problem is that "Midtown" covers a lot of ground, and not every station is equally surrounded by places to sleep.

This list ranks the 15 NYC subway and commuter-rail stations with the most hotels within a 10-minute walk. Counts come from live Agoda inventory based on each hotel's map coordinates. Neighboring stations in dense areas naturally share many of the same hotels, so a high count tells you the neighborhood is hotel-rich — not that those are all exclusively yours.

Most of the top stations cluster around Midtown, which won't surprise anyone who's been to New York. But there are meaningful differences in price, noise level, and neighborhood character between a hotel near Herald Square and one near Bryant Park or NoMad. The rankings below break down what each station area actually feels like and who it suits best.

  1. #1

    Times Sq-42nd St

    162 hotels within 10-min walk
    N Q R W
Times Square at night with illuminated billboards.
    Wikimedia Commons

This is the undisputed center of gravity for NYC hotel inventory, with 162 hotels within a 10-minute walk. Seven subway lines converge here (plus the 1/2/3/7 on the other half of the complex), and JFK is reachable with one subway transfer to the AirTrain at Jamaica. The trade-off is the neighborhood itself: Times Square is loud, crowded, and relentlessly commercial, but nothing in Manhattan is more than a short subway ride away.

    42nd St-Bryant Pk

    161 hotels within 10-min walk

Bryant Park in Midtown Manhattan, with Midtown skyscrapers behind.

One block east of Times Square, this station puts you in a noticeably calmer pocket of Midtown. Bryant Park is a genuine green space with seasonal programming, and the stretch of 42nd Street toward Fifth Avenue has considerably less neon than the blocks to the west. With 161 hotels within a 10-minute walk and B/D/F/M access, it's a strong choice for travelers who want Midtown convenience without staying in the middle of the tourist crush.

The 157 hotels within a 10-minute walk here skew toward mid-range and business-class properties, making it a practical base for shoppers and corporate travelers. The B/D/F/M lines give solid crosstown coverage, and Penn Station is a short walk west for commuter-rail and Amtrak connections.

The 145 hotels within a 10-minute walk draw from the same dense Midtown supply as the nearby subway stations, but the PATH connection adds direct access to Newark Liberty Airport via Newark Penn Station — useful for travelers whose flights go through EWR. There are 145 hotels within a 10-minute walk, many of them positioned on side streets that see less foot traffic than the avenues. A good option if you want Times Square proximity without paying a premium for a window view of the billboards.

The 1/2 trains at 50th Street serve the western side of the Times Square area and put you close to Restaurant Row on 46th Street and Hell's Kitchen to the north. The 133 hotels within a 10-minute walk tend toward newer builds aimed at value-conscious travelers, with a handful of design-forward properties mixed in. It's a slightly less frenetic entry to Midtown than the 42nd Street stations.

The 109 hotels within a 10-minute walk skew toward four- and five-star properties. The 105 hotels within a 10-minute walk are notably different in character from those in the Times Square corridor — smaller, independently operated, and often housed in landmarked buildings. Madison Square Park is a block away, and the neighborhood has strong restaurant options without the tourist-area pricing.

How this list was compiled

Stations were ranked by the number of hotels with a bookable listing on Agoda whose map coordinates fall within a 10-minute walking radius (840 m, assuming a 1.4 m/s walking pace) of each station entrance. Colocated station entries — the subway, LIRR, NJT, and Metro-North platforms at the same complex — are grouped as a single station so Penn Station and Grand Central each appear once. Counts per station cover the full 10-minute catchment; hotels in dense areas may fall within range of multiple nearby stations, so treat the numbers as neighborhood supply, not exclusive inventory.

Every traveler's priorities are different. If you need the most options at the widest price range, the Times Square corridor dominates. If you want quieter streets and boutique hotels, NoMad near 28th Street or the blocks around Bryant Park are worth a closer look. Use the map on each station page to see exactly which hotels fall within the 10-minute walk zone before you commit.
